Optimizing Your Website for Search Engine Success
21 Tips for Getting Better Rankings
A presentation by Terry Brainerd Chadwick

Search engines and directories play a major role in website success. They continue to be the major way that people use to find new information and services on the Web. Being included and ranked high in the databases of the top search engines and directories is especially important for new websites who have yet to etablish an audience.

More established websites may find that only ten percent or so of their traffic comes from search engines and directories, since many of their repeat users have bookmarked sites or new users come in by word-of-mouth referrals. Estimates on the amount of search engine and directory referrals an established site should have range from 10 to 50 percent.

Getting high rankings on search engines and directory search is more than a matter of submitting your domain address to hundreds of search sites. It requires careful design, research on keywords used by customers, planning and executing a submission strategy, and planning and performing search engine and directory maintenance functions.
